ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU seeks a full-time position of Director of Engineering, Data in the Product and Technology Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY/Remote*.    

The ACLU’s Product & Technology team partners with departments across the ACLU in order to build and maintain innovative, robust and secure digital products and technical systems that accelerate the ACLU’s mission as our nationwide guardian of rights and liberties. We are a team of engineers, designers, product managers and administrators who take pride in creating technical solutions that help raise money, get our message out in the world, mobilize our supporters and manage our data with integrity.  

Reporting to the Head of Technology, the Director of Engineering, Data will be responsible for supporting and overseeing a high-functioning, high-impact, and motivated team of engineers who will build and own a centralized and robust multi-sourced pipeline and data warehouse solution that supports scalability for our growing constituent database and facilitates integrations with multiple CRM platforms. This role will work closely with peer leaders in engineering, analytics, and product management as well as stakeholders in other departments to set and drive a long-term technology strategy that meets current and anticipates future organizational needs. The ideal candidate is a strong technical leader with previous management experience and the ability to build and guide an effective engineering organization through mentorship, coaching, and technical and strategic leadership.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide hands-on management and individualized support to software engineers on one or more cross-functional teams responsible for designing, building, and orchestrating reliable data pipeline, storage, and transformation solutions 
  • Influence technology strategy and drive data initiatives for the department, working collaboratively across team boundaries to share common infrastructure and functional capabilities 
  • Drive data and systems architecture planning, helping teams to make data platform, tooling, and other technology decisions that align with organizational goals and priorities
  • Develop technical roadmaps and lead prioritization of technical investments that balance product vision, compliance with privacy and security policies, and the quality of systems that support our data products and platforms 
  • Act as a core partner and advisor to stakeholders in privacy & data governance, analytics engineering, fundraising, and other areas where you will provide a strong engineering perspective on major data-related decisions 
  • Partner with peer leaders within Product, Analytics, and Engineering to understand and address gaps or improvement opportunities within the department related to technology, collaboration, team health, operational workflows and other internal needs  
  • Advise on resource planning, personnel decisions, and team structures to meet current and anticipate future needs of the department 
  • Hire and onboard new engineers, setting the tone, policy, and goals for building a diverse, high-quality engineering team

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience leading a software engineering team with multiple direct reports, strategic planning, goal setting, and other leadership responsibilities  
  • Hands-on experience designing, building, and orchestrating data pipelines, data transformation and storage solutions, or other data infrastructure solutions and related operational workflows in a high-volume production environment
  • Experience leading complex technical projects from business requirements and system design through production  
  • Experience managing and displacing legacy software tools and systems 
  • Technical ability to problem-solve with engineers on architectural trade-offs and technology selections  
  • Experience hiring and developing high-functioning engineering teams, monitoring and managing team performance, and supporting individual career growth through mentorship, coaching, and feedback 
  • Excellent leadership skills, including strategic thinking, analytical reasoning, alignment building, initiative, collaboration, communication, and empathy  

COMPENSATION

The annual salary for this position is $196,797 (Level C2). This salary is reflective of a position based in New York, NY. This salary will be subject to a locality adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting. Note that most of the salaries listed on our job postings reflect New York, NY salaries, where our National offices are headquartered.
