ABOUT THE JOB
The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Director of Affiliate Analytics in the Analytics Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY/ Remote*.
ACLU Analytics partners with teams across the organization to enable the ACLU to make smart, evidence-based decisions and bring quantitative insights on our issues to the courtroom and the public. Our team's work ranges from social science research for litigation & advocacy, to analysis & reporting for fundraising and engagement, to building and maintaining our data infrastructure. We strive to ensure the ACLU leads by example in the ethical use of data and technology. This includes maintaining our privacy and security standards, pushing for transparent data practices from government and corporate actors, and helping to steward high standards for algorithmic fairness, accountability, and transparency.
Reporting to the Chief Analytics Officer, the Director of Affiliate Analytics leads the Analytics team’s work with and support of the ACLU’s network of 53 affiliates nationwide. This includes triaging, prioritizing, and executing high-impact data and analytics work for affiliate litigation and advocacy efforts; supporting, mentoring, and supervising data analysts and scientists, as well as data-related contractors and academic partners embedded with affiliates; and strategically building capacity for data work in affiliates. The scope of the analytics work may include partnering with ACLU attorneys and advocates across a wide range of civil liberties issues to shape research questions, conduct analyses (ranging from descriptive analytics to causal inference modeling to computational analyses), and evaluate program effectiveness.
* Note: this position can function remotely from a U.S. location on an interim basis and may be eligible for permanent remote work from a location within the U.S
RESPONSIBILITIES
You will play a leadership role on the Analytics team, and contribute to the overall strategy and roadmap of our Analytics work. You will also mentor and/or directly manage data analysts embedded within affiliates, partner with the Director, Legal Analytics & Quantitative Research on shared national/affiliate legal and advocacy priorities, and build capacity and infrastructure to support a nationwide network of data and analytics staff and contractors. You will serve as the primary liaison with stakeholders in the Affiliate Support and Nationwide Initiatives (ASNI) department at ACLU National, as well as with the ACLU’s 53 affiliates. Below is a sampling of the types of projects you can expect to dive into:
- Train, support, and supervise a data analyst embedded with the ACLU’s Southern Collective state affiliates to build capacity in key southern priority states
- Investigate and collect data from state court systems and support advocacy through research of these systems
- Design and support execution of region- or state-specific messaging research on ACLU issues
- Work with our Analytics Infrastructure team to extend support on infrastructure and tools to analysts embedded in affiliates, including providing access and training
- Provide mentorship and professional development, and create shared resources for analysts embedded in affiliates
- Identify and prioritize areas of strategic investment in the affiliate network, drawing on resources within the National Analytics and ASNI teams
- Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
- Undergraduate or advanced degree in a quantitative field (e.g., Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Political Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Computer Science) or equivalent experience
- Significant years of experience applying data and advanced analytics tools in a research, advocacy, or non-profit setting
- Management or leadership experience on a technical team
- Fluency in Python or R, or similar analytics and programming languages
- Familiarity with a wide range of statistical methods, social science methods, machine learning techniques, and computational techniques
- Strong technical communication and stakeholder management skills
- Commitment to the mission of the ACLU

- Commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflict
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Understanding of the empirical social science literature in one or more of the following areas: voting rights, immigration, criminal justice, racial justice, reproductive freedom
- Experience with FOIA requests
- Experience with program evaluation techniques
- Experience with quantitative work in support of litigation
- Experience with grant writing
- Experience working with ACLU state affiliates or a similar affiliate structure in a non-profit setting
COMPENSATION
The annual salary for this position is $159,135 (Level D). This salary is reflective of a position based in New York, NY. This salary will be subject to a locality adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting. Note that most of the salaries listed on our job postings reflect New York, NY salaries, where our National offices are headquartered.
