Introduction:
Civitech works to create a more reflective democracy by developing technology and data products that help Democratic candidates run for office and win, empower progressive causes, and increase civic participation. We aim to make data and technology radically more available in service of strengthening our democracy.
Since our founding in 2019 our technology has empowered voter registration efforts led by political campaigns and advocacy organizations to register over 1M voters, and we’ve supported organizations across the progressive political ecosystem.
The Data Steward will lead our efforts to advance the quality of election-related data through interactions with vendors, users, and our technical staff. They will meaningfully contribute to make a broader, more accurate, centralized source of truth available to the entire progressive ecosystem about elections up and down the ballot.

What You Will Do
- Understand details and variations in the electoral process from the perspective of voters, candidates, campaigns, parties, and government.
- Example: You will learn and become an expert on applying to get on the ballot, the types of positions that are elected in different states/counties, whether a given position has a primary and what kind, and when elections occur throughout the year.
- Serve as the primary subject matter expert about election-related data sources and content.
- Produce and maintain documentation about our data sets.
- Recommend standards and processes for monitoring the accuracy and completeness of data sets.
- Evaluate the reality, severity, and prevalence of suspected problems.
- Diagnose systemic problems and coordinate comprehensive solutions to them.
About You
- You have extensive political domain knowledge and a strong handle on electoral processes at various levels of government.
- While you’re not necessarily an engineer or coder, you are comfortable and experienced with working with various tech tools.
- You are comfortable and confident translating client requests into technical solutions for the Engineering team to take action on.
- You are able to adapt to ambiguity.
- You truly enjoy digging into the nuts and bolts of data sets and find data exploration exciting!
The Data Steward is on our Data Team, and reports to our Enterprise Data Architect.
About our Data Team: The Data Team is focused on building the most robust database of information about voting-eligible adults in the United States available anywhere. Our datasets cover voter registrations, voter history, statistical scores, contact information, campaign goals, campaign actions, mail tracking, web tracking, advanced address & geocode processes, election-related maps, election results, and more.
Civitech is headquartered in Austin, TX. Austin candidates are preferred, but we are open to remote for the right candidate. All employees are currently working remotely until it is safe to return to our office.
Classification, Salary, and Benefits: Full-time, competitive salary ($75,000-$105,000 for Austin-based hires, commensurate with experience and location). Benefits include a company health plan with medical, dental, and vision insurance; four weeks paid vacation time per year; 10 days paid sick time; and a competitive company stock option plan.
