About the position
Wirecutter is seeking a Data Engineer to help build out and maintain the infrastructure and pipelines that power our business. Data Engineers operate within a distributed, agile, cross-functional team. The Data Platforms team at Wirecutter has a company-wide impact by providing the data to inform the reader experience, product, editorial, growth, and financial decisions at Wirecutter. The team is responsible for the ETL processes, architecture, and storage of our data for reporting and analysis, and looks to continually improve on the volume, reliability, monitoring, and infrastructure that supports our own tooling.
Our data engineering tech stack consists of:
Python and Cloud Composer for ETL pipelines
GCS and BigQuery for storage and analytics
Looker, Google Analytics, and Mode for Business Intelligence dashboarding
Responsibilities
Write, debug, and test ETL processes for new or existing data pipelines.
Create and update data models that are appropriately scalable, standardized, performant, and reliable.
Help drive the optimization, testing, and tooling to improve data quality.
Write and maintain testing, data validation, and documentation.
Support and maintain the integrity and security of our internal data.
Maintain an understanding of Wirecutter's data platforms and products as well as the data platforms and products of our parent company, the New York Times
Leverage and improve on existing features and tools from both the Wirecutter and New York Times
Share knowledge and problem solving with other members of your team and the digital department.
Recommend solutions that best align with our product and business goals, as well as the quality, reliability, and secure storage and replication of our data.
Improve our development workflow and infrastructure.
Contribute to engineering initiatives and culture as a member of Wirecutter’s engineering department.
Qualifications
You have 3+ years in software or data engineering or relevant experience building data pipelines and modeling large scale data models for OLAP purposes.
You can design & optimize queries, data sets, and data pipelines to organize, collect and standardize data that helps generate insights and addresses reporting needs.
You have experience monitoring and optimizing for query and data transfer performance on BigQuery and GCS (or on another cloud platform).
You have experience reliably integrating and reliably ingesting data from 3rd party APIs (including writing validation and alerting).
You have experience building ETLs in a distributed environment.
You have experience with version control, and CI/CD pipelines.
You are thoughtful, clear, and persuasive in writing and in person.
You have strong problem-solving skills and critical thinking abilities.
You have experience listening to analysts and other stakeholders, and can translate their needs into actionable tasks.
You are excited to play a pivotal role in Wirecutter’s mission, innovation, and growth.
You are passionate and enthusiastic about what you do.
Ideally, you have production experience with Python and Apache Airflow.
Ideally, you have experience with BI tools and managing data sets for BI tools.
Ideally, you have experience working with Google Tag Manager and analytics data sets
Ideally, you’ve worked as a member of a distributed team.
