What you'll be doing
- Build and lead a team of highly-engaged engineers by hiring, coaching, and instilling a sense of ownership and mission.
- Oversee the vision and roadmap for the ML Platform team: work within the team and with partner teams to develop platform, infrastructure, and tooling to support high-scale ML-driven personalization, search, and safety systems.
- Manage processes and use your technical expertise to ensure that the Machine Learning and Data Science teams at Discord are high leverage and set-up to achieve extraordinary results.
- Democratize the usage of machine learning at Discord over time.
- Work with other Engineering Managers to improve the Engineering organization and uphold our workplace philosophy.
What you should have
- You have 7+ years of deep experience as a Software Engineer.
- You have 3+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager and have successfully managed a team of at least 10+ Software Engineers, including other Engineering Managers.
- You're a mentor, storyteller, and you're great at coordinating with a variety of teams throughout the company.
- You have extensive experience leading complex technical projects in dynamic environments with successful outcomes.
- Experience building, deploying, and operating large-scale machine learning systems from training to serving to model iteration: it makes you uncomfortable deploying something for end-users without considering key performance metrics, monitors and dashboards, graceful degradation, feature flags, etc.
- You are passionate about coaching and leading other engineers, but remain highly technical.
- You keep up with the industry trends and identify new tools to use to solve technical problems.
Bonus Points
- Experience with the unique challenges of working in a fast-moving start-up environment
- Experience with large-scale personalization, search, or content moderation systems
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (Google Cloud, AWS, etc) and Kubernetes/Docker
- Experience with open source and managed data products like Kafka, Spark, Flink, Cassandra/Scylla, Hadoop, Airflow, etc.
- Experience with infrastructure management tooling like Terraform and build systems
