About WattTime

WattTime is a rare non-profit tech startup. We’re laser focused on helping people, companies, and policymakers that are working to drive down emissions multiply their good impact - usually at no cost. We do this through several specific creative uses of extremely detailed emissions datasets. Founded by UC Berkeley researchers, we’re best known for inventing Automated Emissions Reduction (AER), a data-driven technique that over 100 million IoT devices now use to reduce fossil fuel use by automatically running on surplus clean/renewable energy. We also develop and share other techniques, like our Emissionality technology that more and more wind and solar farms are using to multiply their environmental impact. Today, WattTime is also the secretariat of the Climate TRACE coalition, a global team-up of nonprofits, tech companies, and universities working to use machine learning and remote sensing to provide open, transparent, independent monitoring of nearly every major individual source of GHG emissions worldwide. About the Role

WattTime’s Automated Emissions Reduction (AER) team is expanding our product and looking for a scientist to raise the bar on our models. Our small team has made great strides and identified where our models need to be validated and refined. We are looking for someone grounded in mathematical modeling who can lead cutting edge research in electricity grids. You will work with other data scientists and engineers to turn research into production models and data pipelines. Ideally you will bring an in-depth knowledge of power systems, electricity transmission and distribution, or grid dispatch models.

Responsibilities

  • Lead research on electricity carbon emissions models and conduct experiments for validating model performance
  • Benchmark and categorize marginal emissions models for a variety of use cases ranging from short run AER to long run expansion of renewable energy generation
  • Document, publish, and present results both internally and to external stakeholders, informing very high impact decisions for corporate carbon policies
  • Create plots and data visualizations to discern salient points buried in large time series datasets
  • Exemplify an iterative modeling and communication approach that encourages collaboration amongst a team of data scientists and engineers
  • Help design new data pipelines to support our expansion, e.g. a weather data store
  • Lead by example with good patterns that level up our data and software environment

Qualifications

The person hired for this position should be committed to WattTime’s mission. All candidates should have proven experience that includes:

  • 5+ years of hands on experience in statistics, data science, or mathematical modeling
  • Proven ability to lead a research project, give presentations, and communicate to multiple stakeholders
  • 2+ years experience analyzing large time series datasets and employing models that handle autocorrelation and seasonality
  • 2+ years writing clean code that is version controlled (Python and Git preferred)
  • Skilled with Python or R libraries for statistical modeling such as numpy, scikit-learn, statsmodels, lm, or glm
  • Experienced in prioritizing model explainability; and able to select models that can be understood and maintained by other scientists and engineers
  • Flexible and willing to contribute to WattTime’s API, ML models, and product direction
  • Collaborative, communicative, and respectful
  • Ability to work effectively from a remote environment across regular U.S. work hours through tools like Slack, Zoom, GSuite, and others
  • Willingness to travel to team collaborative sessions a few times a year
  • Bonus points for publications in power systems, grid dispatch models, statistics, operations research, or causal inference
