Primary Responsibilities:
- Part of a team of dedicated actuaries and data scientists to study the usage of ML-based algorithms applied to historical pharmacy, inpatient notification data, prior authorization data and ultimate utilization and claims data to identify predictive capabilities that can enhance UHC’s current trend forecasting models
- Work with the operational team to identify opportunities to use additional inventory data and apply ML-base algorithms to determine claim denial/appeal likelihood for potential use in our current reserving methods that rely on historical percentages of pended claim payment
- Work with the E&I forecasting and reserving teams to formally implement ML-based techniques
- Collaborates with IT partners on hardware (on-prem and cloud), software, and other infrastructure needed to enable AI and ML strategy
- Stay connected and involved with UHG’s broader AI/ML strategy

Required Qualifications:
- 5+ years healthcare industry experience in a data science or advanced analytics role
- 5+ years of experience working in high-level statistical programming language (e.g. Python, R)
- Experience with Git version control system and knowledge of DevOps and agile development practices
- Experience working with data from a variety of sources (e.g. databases, JSON, text-based, and unstructured data)
- Experience designing and implementing ETL processes
- Experience in applying data science concepts (predictive analytics, machine learning, unsupervised learning) to solve practice business problems
- Proficiency in SQL; experience writing well-structured and efficient queries
Preferred Qualifications
- Associateship or Fellowship designation from the Society of Actuaries
- Credential in data science (SOA’s predictive analytics certificate or master’s degree in data science)
- Experience working with traditional actuarial-based forecasting and reserving models and methods
- Proven excellent storytelling skill set and mastery of communicating complex technical information to a non-technical audience

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
