The Role

Upstart is looking for a Data Engineering manager to lead one of 3 Pillars of the business (Growth, Product, Finance & Operations). Intelligent use of data is central to the success of our product and company. Our data engineering team provides an ecosystem of tools and datasets that enable both business users and technical users to reliably access our data.

In the past year, we’ve more than doubled our engineering team and are continuing to expand rapidly in our San Mateo and Columbus offices. How you’ll make an impact:

• Set the technical direction for data at Upstart
• Work collaboratively with product managers, software engineers, data scientists, and analytics teams to set development priorities
• Coach individuals through career and skill development
• Partner with our recruiting team to attract and hire a diverse team of engineers
• Support the team: You’ll collaborate with engineering leadership and key stakeholders on longer-term, strategic planning as well as seeing out the execution of those initiatives.
• Support engineers’ growth: You’ll have direct reports ranging from mid-level to highly experienced engineers. You’ll be responsible for their performance and career growth. You’ll work with them to identify areas in our Engineering Competency Matrix where they’d like to focus their efforts, and support them through regular feedback, goal setting, and providing them with challenging work that drives value for our users and business. 
• Build the team: This team is growing rapidly, and we want you to be a key part of that growth. You’ll be involved in the hiring process from application review to offer through to onboarding your new engineers.
• Collaborate with leaders across the organization: You’ll work with leaders in every department - Revenue, Finance, Marketing, Product, Engineering, and more - to help solve the needs of an increasingly data-driven organization. In this role, you’ll be reporting to our Senior Engineering Manager, Data. 

Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Remote ^(#LI-REMOTE) 

Time Zone Requirements - This team operates on the East/West Coast time zone.

Travel Requirements - This team has regular on-site collaboration sessions. These occur a few days per quarter at the San Mateo or Columbus office. If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.

What we’re looking for:

• 2+ years of engineering management experience and 10+ years overall software
• engineering experience
• Demonstrated experience building and leading small teams
• Experience building modern data platforms using cloud native technologies -- our stack
• includes Looker, Redshift, Kafka, Spark, AWS, Python, Postgres, and Kubernetes
• Adeptness in building and managing relationships with surrounding teams including
• product, software engineering, data science, growth, and analytics teams
• Persuasive communicator in person and in writing
