Job Description
Are you bored optimizing ads? Do you really want to change the world rather than just say you are? Do you want to be part of the business and have direct influence over business strategies rather than being a “just another scientist”? If so, we have the role for you.
We are hiring for the Head of Network Science and Behavioral Modeling at Cash App. Understanding how network effects enable customer engagement and retention is a strategic priority for Cash. In this position you will have complete ownership and responsibility for building, maintaining and analyzing Cash App’s customer graph for purposes of community finding, business segmentation, quantifying network effect / virality and overcoming customer “cold start”. Your role is specifically responsible for helping management locate sub-networks and quantify the social influences on these sub-networks within both the Cash App and broader Block ecosystem. The output of your work will be used directly to build products, forecast business results and measure the impact of marketing campaigns.
Additionally, you will manage other data scientists in the development, implementation and maintenance of a suite of behavioral models to predict customer behavior, specifically churn, winback, product attach and the movement of funds in and out of the cash app ecosystem. The results of these models will be used to drive top-line business decisions, communicate strategies to Wall St. and influence investment decisioning. It is of utmost importance that the modeling specifications are interpretable by a business audience.
You will report directly to the Head of Quantitative Finance and Strategy and you will present your results to an Executive Audience on a regular basis. Understanding our networks from a quantitative standpoint is a strategic priority for both Cash App Executives as well as the Board of Directors.
Because of the high-profile nature of this role we are looking for someone who not only specializes in graph science but also can present to executive management and has the ability to manage a team of data scientists focused on behavioral model development.
Qualifications

- PhD in a quantitative field such as Statistics, Computer Science, Physics or a PhD in Social Sciences with a strong quantitative background
- 5+ years of experience in network science specifically related to community finding (modularity maximization, spectral clustering, hierarchical, etc.) and network effect measurement / scoring
- 5+ years of behavioral modeling using both parametric and non-parametric techniques (classification / time series)
- Knowledge of Python, Graph Databases, Docker, Snowflake, Databricks and Prefect
- Understanding of how social influences affect customer behavior and spending patterns
Nice to have:
- Understanding of Cash App business model and how network effects, virality and the macroeconomic environment influence our business
- Experience leading a team and presenting results to executives up to and including CEO
Technologies we use and teach:
